April was a fun month of coding. I am sharing a few of the pieces and activities from this month below. Have fun forking, playing, and creating!
A Quiet Space
This piece was created at the end of March as a stream of consciousness. I started with the Birb’s Nest coding group prompt of “space” and gradually pulled this together. This is featured in Codepen Spark Issue 279. Click here for the interactive piece. Click to pause, press space to change, and “s” to save.
Petri Architected
The Birb’s Nest coding challenge prompt was “microcosm.” I created a bird first (not code), and then came back and created “Petri Architected.” This piece is featured in Codepen Spark Issue 283. To play with this interactive piece, click here.
Textured Current
This piece was created in April to play with the prompt “waves”. I hoped for the texture of particles in the water, grains, and light. Click here for the interactive piece. Press space to pause, “s” to save and click to randomize.
Circle Hatching
This piece was created in April to play with the prompt “hatching”. This code takes an image and samples the pixels to create smaller and smaller arcs. You can click and add more focal points. The painting is an acrylic piece I did a few years ago. This is featured in Codepen Spark Issue 281. Click here for the interactive piece.
Hatching with Music
Another play with hatching was done with music. You need to click to start the music. The music is a piano doodle I did awhile ago. Press space to change color, press “c” to change more color, click to change the flocking cohesion. This won’t work on mobile well. Make sure your volume is on for the tab. Click here to open the interactive piece.
Unwound
I played with music more with a piece called Unwound. Click to start the music and press the spacebar to restart it. The music was created in soundtrap. Click here to open the interactive code.
Hex-a-quilt
Lots of hexagonal quilt designs to play with. Press “s” to save, arrow up/down to change, and click to randomize. Click here to play with the interactive piece. A template is here.
Two Body with Lots of Bodies
I made a 3d world with satellites. To play with this interactive piece, click here.
90’s Math Textbook Design
Most of the interesting content in this piece lies within the comments. Enjoy. Click here to view.
In the classroom:
I have three small coding groups in p5js per week. Students are working on games with dragons, instruments, random sentence generators, and some are wanting to go back to scratch for awhile. For class discussion we work through questions and problems in students’ code as they come up, and I also try to have prompts/ideas. The last two that seem to have been a hit were music and 3d space.
Music
Some students are working on musical instruments and visualizers. Here is the example, “The Annoying Potato”, that I brought to class (forgive me). Make sure your volume is on. We also looked at visualizers and sound trap. Update: I bought https://annoying.one/ for this project.
3D Space
We worked on building in the 3d. Some students are working on a sculpture in tinkercad to put on the coffee table. We also looked at moving, lighting, and rotating in this space.
